Malala Yousafzai was born on October 9, 1997 in the Swat Valley of Pakistan. In October 2012, she was shot in the head by the Taliban while riding in a school bus.
She survived, and continues to advocate for girls’ education. On October 10, 2012 Malala blogged about her experiences and thoughts on the Taliban’s attack on her school:.
“I am Malala. I am 14 years old. I am a student. I love learning. I love my school. I was riding my school bus home on October 9 when a gunman opened fire on us from a hillside.
He shot me in the head and my friends in the bus with me. He shot me because he thought I was a boy. He wanted to stop me from learning. But his bullets couldn’t stop me from learning. They only made me more determined to become a powerful voice for girls everywhere.”.
