Do You Need a Business License to Start a Blog?

Starting a blog is not the same as starting a business. A business license is required to operate a business in the state where you reside.

If you are not located in one of the states that requires a business license, then you may operate your blog without a license, but you must adhere to all other applicable state laws.

There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, if your blog is hosted on a third-party platform and you do not have access to the platform’s settings, then you may not need to obtain a business license.

In addition, if your blog is primarily about personal information that you do not want to make public (such as your address or phone number), then you do not need a business license.

If you are unsure whether or not you need a business license to start a blog, then it is best to consult with an attorney or an online resource that can help guide you through the process of obtaining a license. In general, though, starting and operating a blog without a business license is generally legal and does not pose any major risks.
